About the PTA

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of The High School for Math, Science and Engineering (HSMSE) at The City College of New York engages parents in their children’s education and raises funds to support the school’s sports teams, extracurricular activities and many enrichment opportunities and curriculum support for students and faculty.

The PTA’s primary functions include:

  • Community Building – create a learning community by bringing together school administrators and teachers with parents to create better opportunities for our children, to run events that bring students and their parents together
  • Enrichment – together with the administration and guidance department, we run programs to inform parents about the curriculum, community service, internship and summer opportunities, and college preparation
  • Communications – we distribute monthly newsletters, email bulletins, and run outreach programs
  • Fundraising – the PTA funds most clubs and sports at HSMSE, underwrites curricular materials, teacher training, special events and parties. No student will be turned away from an event if they can’t afford to participate

We welcome all parents to attend PTA meetings. PTA Meetings take place monthly, usually in Baskerville Hall. Each meeting has a themed presentation or discussion to help parents engage with their children’s education and prepare for college.

The Door to Baskerville Hall is Always Open: Volunteer!
The PTA invites parent volunteers to get involved for as little or as much time as they can spare. School events such as the Pizza Party in September, the Prospective Students’ Open House in October, or the Prom Boutique in May are great ways to volunteer for just a couple of hours.

Every hour of our time we volunteer or services we provide at an event, in PTA meetings, on a committee, soliciting donations for our annual auction, or behind the scenes, ensures that our kids experience the academic excellence, resources, and enrichment for which HSMSE is recognized.

Donations and Matching Gifts
Each and every member of the community can make a difference at HSMSE. Family donations go toward enriching our children’s education and high school experience. Without generous parental support, HSMSE would lack many of the programs that round out its curriculum.

The best way to directly benefit students at HSMSE, is to make a one-time or monthly donation. The suggested annual donation per family is $600/family, but of course we only expect you to give what you can. It is the PTA’s goal to have 100% participation, so please give whatever you can afford.

Tax-deductible donations can be made online or by check. Checks should be mailed to HSMSE PTA, Baskerville Hall, 240 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10031.

Does your employer make matching gifts to charities? The PTA of HSMSE is recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit by the IRS and is eligible for matching gifts.

PTA Communications
The PTA sends all of its communications, including monthly newsletters, to parents via Constant Contact. The school administration also uses this system to send important notices about school events, internships, summer opportunities, college planning and other important communications. It is essential that at least one parent of each student receive these emails, so please sign up if you are not receiving regular emails from us.

PTA Meetings
PTA Meetings are held monthly; meetings are open to all and are an excellent way to keep up with what’s happening at school. Normally the Principal attends the meeting and gives attendees an update on what is going on at HSMSE. Meetings normally take place on a Tuesday evening at 6:30. After the PTA business concludes, there is typically a presentation on an important topic. If you have a specific issue that you would like discussed at a meeting, please inform the PTA President or Recording Secretary before the meeting so that the issue may be placed on the agenda.

Principal’s Breakfast
For parents who can’t attend PTA meetings in the evening, or for those seeking to be better informed about their children’s education, Principal Bonds hosts a monthly breakfast meeting from October through May. All parents and guardians are welcome at the Principal’s Breakfast as often as they can attend.

PTA Fundraising
The PTA plans, organizes, and runs community events to bring together HSMSE families and raise funds for all our programs. Events include the Fall Parent-Teacher Mixer and Spring Auction to help us reach our budget goals. We encourage all parents to help gather donations for the auction, such as restaurant gift certificates, sports and theater tickets, special experiences, memberships and gift items. PTA Budget
Each spring, the PTA Executive Board reviews the expenses of the previous school year, determines the anticipated expenses of the upcoming school year, and gets input from the Principal about upcoming expenses. The Principal asks the PTA to supplement costs that are not covered in the allotment given to the school by the Department of Education. Once approved by the Executive Board, the budget is presented to the general membership at the last general PTA meeting of the school year. A majority of those attending must approve the budget. Once the budget is approved, parents have made a commitment to raising the funds, whether by personal donations or fund-raising initiatives.

PTA Executive Board
The PTA Executive Board is a group of parent volunteers, elected yearly in the Spring, who work with the HSMSE community to support the vision of the school through fundraising and the implementation of programs and initiatives. The PTA Executive Board, class representatives, and the Principal, meet monthly.
