PTA Meeting Minutes – November 16, 2017

DRAFT MINUTES
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 6:45 pm.

The draft minutes for the September 14 and October 19 HSMSE PTA meetings were reviewed and unanimously approved.

PTA President Susan Townes introduced Principal Crystal Bonds, who reported on several initiatives.

First, the school has successfully hired a second German teacher.

Second, the school is launching a new initiative, Ladies’ Luncheon, to empower the schools’ female students. The first lunch, to be held in December, will be mandatory for all of the school’s female students; successive lunches will be voluntary. HSMSE parents are funding the first three lunches; the New York Academy of Sciences is interested in funding the remaining lunches.

Third, the school is launching a partnership with Doing For Others, a web and mobile platform enabling students to upload their community service hours, and to have their hours linked to philanthropic appeals based on the number of hours worked. Philanthropic initiatives that will be supported by this effort include: reducing the incidence of gestational worms in developing countries; supporting World Vision, an initiative that sends packaged toiletries to developing countries; and increasing PTA funds to help underwrite HSMSE senior dues for those in need.

Fourth, in January the school will launch Snacks With the Principal, an afterschool initiative designed to enable students to engage with Principal Bonds.

Principal Bonds introduced the school’s new parent coordinator, Laurie Pecorari (lpecorari@hsmse.org), who will be at the school full time, five days a week.

Principal Bonds also reported that some parents would like to have scheduled parent teacher conferences, rather than first come first serve; she asked the PTA to discuss and decide this question.

Principal Bonds also thanked Diane Hoffman for working on the school’s website, with a new website to launch in January.

Finally, Principal Bonds reported that students may receive free breakfast in Room 106 from 7-7:45 AM daily.

President Townes presented the PTA budget for the 2017-2018 school year.

President Townes introduced Jill Steinberg from Applerouth Tutoring Services, who presented an overview of the SAT/ACT testing process.

President Townes announced a fundraising initiative to support the new German teacher. A suggestion was voiced from the floor to request that the school leadership revisit the German program, in light of the difficulties faced in finding German teachers. The PTA Executive Board will discuss this request at its next meeting.

Meeting Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 7:52 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Anna Harvey
