PTA Meeting Minutes – September 14, 2017

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 6:40 pm.

Approval of Minutes: The June minutes were presented and unanimously approved, with the addition of Lara Dicus elected as Parent Representative to the Student Leadership Team on June 6, 2017. 

Officer Reports:

President: President Susan Townes introduced the PTA Executive Committee; Kristina Gowin, the school’s Health and Wellness Counselor, who gave a presentation on the office’s programming for the school’s students; and Candie Patterson, the school’s 9th and 10th grade Guidance Counselor, who described her outreach efforts to the freshman class. President Townes asked all parents to please fill out school lunch forms, and invited all parents to attend the Parent Teacher Mixer on Tuesday, October 3, for which two volunteers are requested. 12-14 parents are also requested to volunteer for the school’s Open House on Tuesday, October 17.

Vice President: Vice President Ken Katzman emphasized the importance of parent volunteers and encouraging students to engage with the school’s sports teams. VP Katzman also stressed that participation on sports teams does not prevent students from pursuing other extra-curricular activities.

Fundraising: Nicole Jacoby gave a presentation on the importance of donating to the school’s fundraising efforts. Each family is requested to donate $600 to the school each year, although all contributions are welcome. Nicole will form a fundraising committee by mid-October to support her efforts.

 SLT Report: SLT Parent Representative and Lara Dicus and Principal Crystal Bonds reported on several recent school developments. A mock SAT/ACT is scheduled for Saturday, September 16, 2017. The school received a College Access for All grant ($30,000 for 3 years). The grant will be used to hold college trips for every grade, publicize College Now courses, provide information about ACT/SAT tests, and give Naviance access to all students. The school also received from Gale Brewer a $200,000 grant for the school’s rooftop garden, and a $130,000 grant to replace smartboards and computers. The school store will open the last week in September. The school installed green water fountains with water bottle fillers. Thursday, September 28 is curriculum night, from 5-8 PM. The school will start searching for a Parent Coordinator at the end of September. The new freshman class has 154 students.

 Elections were held for the position of Freshman Class Parent Delegate (John Fessler and David Cohen), Alumni Relations Chair (Alison Monk), and SLT Parent Representative (Erica Lubetkin).

Diane Hoffman gave a presentation on the redesign project for the school’s website.
