Grading

GRADING OVERVIEW

HSMSE teachers grade on a 100-point scale, with a passing grade set at 65. Final grades are issued at the end of each semester, in January and June. A grade of CR indicates that a student received credit for a course; NC indicates no credit.

All required courses in the math, science and engineering concentrations and the Mount Sinai Program are taught at the advanced level, however only AP and dual-enrollment courses are weighted on DOE transcripts. Scheduling, especially for the Mount Sinai Program participants, may preclude students from taking AP courses.

Due to the highly rigorous academic environment at HSMSE, students who would excel in other settings may not distinguish themselves among their equally talented HSMSE peers. Consequently, our school does not report class rank.

REPORT CARDS AND TRANSCRIPTS

The academic year is broken into two semesters, each with three marking periods. HSMSE mails six report cards, one after each marking period. Final semester grades, which are cumulative, are issued in January and June and appear on the student’s official DOE transcript. Transcripts are available through NYC Schools Account (NYCSA).

HSMSE’s primary grading platform is Jupiter, which tracks attendance records, class schedules, assignments, due dates, grades, and more. Some HSMSE instructors prefer Google Classroom for daily grading and use Jupiter only for periodic grade updates. Students are briefed on the policies for each class at the beginning of the semester, and parents should speak directly to students about their academic progress.
