Clubs
Extracurricular activities are a huge part of HSMSE life, and many of our students say they learn as much outside the classroom as they do inside. Our club options vary each year based on student interest. Students are responsible for club leadership and operations, with support from a staff advisor.
HOW TO JOIN A CLUB
At HSMSE's annual Club Fair (typically held at the end of September), students learn about clubs, meet student leaders, and can sign up to join.
HOW TO FORM A NEW CLUB
All HSMSE clubs have a staff advisor, so students interested in starting a club must find at least one faculty member who can advise the group. Students must complete the following steps before applying to start a club:
- Review DOE policies regarding school clubs.
- Create a name for your club.
- Write a description and purpose of your club.
- Find a faculty advisor willing to work with your club.
- Create and circulate a student petition with at least 5 signatures of students willing to join your club.
- Decide, in consultation with the club advisor, on meeting days and frequency of meetings.
- Complete a club proposal form.
- Have the faculty advisor sign the club proposal form.
- Make a copy of the form for your records.
- Submit the club proposal form to the administration for approval.
Find more information in the HSMSE Club Proposal Form.
CLUB FUNDING
HSMSE clubs are funded by the PTA, and family donations are encouraged. The PTA regularly funds club-related activities and events, including competition entry fees, pizza parties, gear and supplies, printing (for the student newspaper) and more. The PTA funds clubs based on formal budget requests from club advisors (not students). All clubs must be fully approved before advisors can request funding.
