School Newspaper

The Echo, HSMSE's student newspaper, launched in 2023 and, with the support of advisor and English teacher Kelli Hesseltine, quickly became one of the most respected high school newspapers in New York City. Student journalists have taken home multiple awards including the prestigious George Polk Award, and staff members regularly win top placements at The Newsies, annual awards presented during the Baruch College High School Journalism Conference.

The Echo staff is made up of students who take the newspaper class as an elective, along with those who contribute as part of the after-school club. The paper is created entirely by, and for, students, and the mission is to cover life at HSMSE from every angle. The student opinions expressed in The Echo do not represent the opinions of the administration, staff, or student body as a whole. An overview from the team:

At its core, The Echo strives to amplify the volume of student voices and share the untold stories of our community. We look to be a source of information and inspiration for one another, unraveling the relationship to our school by highlighting the myriad of ways in which we all connect—in ways we are all proud of. Call it unity, call it school pride—this newspaper begins with that in mind.
