Cell Phone and Device Policy
All New York State schools prohibit the use of personal internet-enabled devices during the school day on school grounds. This includes cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, laptops, tablets, and portable music and entertainment systems. Students will be able to use school/NYCPS-issued devices during the school day and classroom devices such as laptops and desktops for activities that require a device.
Students will receive a device pouch at the start of the school year and they must store their devices in the pouch before the school day begins. Phones may not be used or removed from the pouch unless a teacher grants permission for academic use. Cell phones and other portable electronic devices may be used in the NAC cafeteria and the Quad area during lunch. Club Advisors and coaches will provide their respective rules regarding cell phone usage outside of the academic school day.
EXCEPTIONS
Students may use their device if they have an individualized education program (IEP) or 504 Plan that includes the use of an internet-enabled device when a DOE-issued device is unable to serve that purpose.
If a student requires an exception for reasons such as medical monitoring/treatments (for example to monitor blood sugar), the parent/guardian must make the request directly with school administrators. Exception requests will be reviewed within one week.
Teachers may authorize the use of devices for educational purposes in certain circumstances. Teachers will clearly communicate when devices may be used and for what purpose. Otherwise, phones must be sealed in the pouch.
