Student Leadership
In addition to leadership opportunities in clubs and athletic teams, HSMSE offers the following opportunities.
SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAM (SLT)
The SLT serves as a forum in which students, teachers, administrators, and parents have an equal voice in discussing school-wide issues. Four students are elected annually to serve a one-year term. Sophomores, juniors and seniors elect one member to represent their grades. The fourth student member is selected from any of the three grades. Students must attend monthly meetings after school and serve on committees between meetings. All members are paid by the DOE for their service. For more information, contact the SLT chairperson at [email protected].
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY (NHS)
The NHS is a national organization committed to promoting character, scholarship, leadership, and service. HSMSE’s chapter of NHS brings together accomplished and community-oriented students who give back to the school through a peer tutoring program. Students apply to the NHS in the spring of sophomore and junior years and are selected by the administration based on their academic standing, volunteerism, and character. For more information, contact the NHS co-presidents at [email protected].
CLASS CO-PRESIDENTS
Each grade has two co-presidents. Sophomore, junior and senior candidates run for election in the spring of the prior year; freshmen elections are held a few months after school starts to give the students a chance to get to know each other. Class presidents work with administration on class events and projects.
LEADERSHIP CLASS
Leadership is an elective class open to students from sophomore year up. Class co-presidents and SLT representatives are highly encouraged to enroll in this class. Students focus on leadership skills, and planning and managing school events throughout the year.
