Standardized Testing
PSAT
HSMSE registers all 10th and 11th grade students for the PSAT in the fall (typically October). The test is held during the school day at Baskerville Hall and a fee applies, but it can be waived. Junior results are considered for National Merit Scholarships; cutoffs for the scholarship change each year and vary by state.
SAT AND ACT
Many students prepare for and/or take the SAT or ACT as early as the summer after sophomore year. To help students determine which test is a better fit and to make a testing plan, the PTA partners with Academic Tutoring Center and funds a free consultation session for all HSMSE students. The College Office and the PTA share information about the program at the end of sophomore year.
HSMSE offers a free SAT for every student in the spring of junior year (usually March). The test is administered during the school day at Baskerville Hall.
Many students choose to register for additional off-site SAT or ACT tests. Test dates fill up early, so these should be booked several months in advance. For upcoming dates, visit act.org and satsuite.collegeboard.org.
TEST PREP
Through a partnership with The Ivy Key, HSMSE offers an 8-week after-school SAT test preparation class beginning in January and another 4-week daytime class in July. The cost is approximately $400 per session.
