Graduation Requirements

NEW YORK STATE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

There are two levels of diploma for graduating high school in New York State – a Regents Diploma and a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. Students can also earn additional designations such as “with honors” as well as earn an HSMSE endorsed diploma.
 
Students need 44 credits in these subject areas to graduate in New York State.
  • 8 credits in core English
  • 8 credits in social studies, including:
  • 4 credits in Global History
  • 2 credits in U.S. History
  • 1 credit in Participation in Government
  • 1 credit in Economics
  • 6 credits in math, including:
  • At least 2 credits in advanced math (for example, Geometry or Algebra II)
  • 6 credits in science, including:
  • 2 credits in any life science
  • 2 credits in any physical science
  • 2 credits in any life science or physical science
  • 2 credits in Languages Other Than English (LOTE)
  • 4 credits in physical education, taken each semester, all 4 years
  • 1 credit in health education
  • 2 credits in arts education: visual arts and music
  • 7 credits in electives
 

REGENTS EXAM REQUIREMENTS

Regents Diploma – a score of 65 or better is required on these Regents exams:
 
  • Comprehensive English
  • Mathematics (Any one)
  • Global History
  • US History
  • Science (Any one)
  • Language other than English
 
Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation – a score of 65 or better is required on these Regents exams:
 
  • Comprehensive English
  • Mathematics: Integrated Algebra, Geometry, AND Algebra II/Trigonometry
  • Global History
  • US History
  • Science: Living Environment AND Physical Science
  • Language other than English
 

ADDITIONAL DESIGNATIONS

The “with honors” designation is added for students with an average score of 90 or more on all required Regents exams.
 
"Mastery in Math” designation is added for students who earn an Advanced Regents Diploma, and have a minimum of 85 on each of three math exams (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II/Trig)
 
“Mastery in Science” designation is added for students who earn an Advanced Regents Diploma, and have a minimum of 85 on each of three science exams (Chemistry, Earth Science, Living Environment, or Physics).
